Preparing for Autumn: Updating Your Altar or Spiritual Space

The transition from late summer to autumn is truly magical, much like the shift from winter to spring. Before the waning months of the year, when resources and daylight grow scarce, nature gives us one last show of abundance and flourishing life. We see it in the colors of the season, in the final harvests of ripe squash and corn, and in the golden light that slowly overtakes the green hues of summer.

If you follow the seasons as part of your spiritual practice, refreshing your altar or working space is a meaningful way to stay attuned to nature’s cycles. Just as every magical working space is personal, the way you decorate can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like. The most important thing is to use pieces that speak to you and your practice.

Incorporating Color
Color is one of the easiest ways to honor any season or event. Candles, fabric, table coverings, and artwork can all evoke the richness of autumn. Choose deep, earthy tones like burgundy, mocha, ochre, emerald, and eggplant.

Bringing in Natural Elements
Collecting materials from local parks or your garden is a beautiful way to incorporate nature directly into your space. Try dried or fresh flowers like coneflower, goldenrod, and black-eyed Susans. Acorns, nuts, and seasonal vegetables like corn and gourds make easy and festive additions. Gather fallen branches that speak to you, or create a garland from colorful autumn leaves.

Pomegranate is another symbol of autumn, tied to the goddess Persephone, who descends to the Underworld for the latter half of the year. Use fresh or dried pomegranates, or look for pomegranate-themed décor online.

Aromatherapy
Scents can be a powerful way to refresh your space. Look for candles, oils, and incense in fragrances like warm spices, apple, sandalwood, campfire, or amber.

Symbols of Transition and the Unseen
Death is an inevitable part of life, and as we move into the dark half of the year, we prepare for the slow, still winter months ahead. Around Samhain and Halloween, it’s believed the veil between our world and the Otherworld (where spirits reside) grows thin. This allows for easier communication with those who have crossed over, as well as the spirits of the land.

Skulls and bones are common motifs on autumn altars, serving as reminders of our connection to that unseen world and to what lies beyond the life and light of summer. If you choose to use bones, please make sure they are ethically sourced or naturally found.

Honoring Ancestors
Creating a dedicated ancestor altar or a small area in your workspace can be a sincere way to remember loved ones while tapping into the Otherworldly energy of the season. Include photos of family and friends you wish to honor, or display trinkets and heirlooms that connect you to the past. Small offerings, like a lit candle, coffee or spirits, or herbs, can initiate a quiet moment of remembrance.

Divination Tools
Because many believe the veil is thinning in autumn, divination tools are a popular altar addition. Consider a scrying mirror (you can even thrift an old one), seasonally themed tarot or oracle cards, runes, or pendulums.

Protective Elements
Don’t forget to incorporate protection - a necessary foundation for any working practice. This might include white or black salt, iron, rosemary, black tourmaline, or smoky quartz.

For a Bit of Fun
While an altar filled with natural and antique pieces is beautiful, I’m not above scouring dollar and craft stores for a few whimsical (and inexpensive) touches. Some things I look for:

  • Table confetti in the shapes of leaves, pumpkins, ghosts, and bats

  • Faux leaf garlands and wheat sheaves

  • Simple candle holders in orange, red, or yellow

  • Small containers and dishes shaped like pumpkins or leaves (perfect for holding loose herbs, tea, or crystals)

What are your must-have pieces for autumn? I'd love to hear in a comment below!

However you plan to celebrate, enjoy the season and make it your own 🍂
