Capricorn Season & The Tarot: The Devil and Pentacles Decans

Tarot Correspondences

Each zodiac sign has a corresponding set of tarot cards that reflect its themes and energies. Capricorn is mainly associated with the Devil card, as well as the Two, Three, and Four of Pentacles.

The Devil

Capricorn is ambitious, determined, and success-oriented. As an earth sign, this energy is grounded and practical, seeking pragmatic and methodical steps that will turn abstract dreams into something tangible. Especially during the start of the new year, many of us are drawn to reflect on our aspirations for the coming months. It’s important to create routines that mesh with our working and learning styles, and not to become overly consumed with productivity or perfection. Work hard, but also smartly and efficiently. And, make sure you’re taking care of your body and mind in the process.

The Devil is tied to pleasure and indulgence, and the extreme expressions of these qualities when they become obsession or addiction. In Capricorn, we see the attraction of success and productivity skewed into an unhealthy fixation on work. Or, when we fall into materialism, lured by what looks or feels good. At this point, we lose our freedom and autonomy, becoming both physically and spiritually enslaved to someone or something else. This card is a reminder to be aware of greedy tendencies, and to be mindful of how far we’re willing to push ourselves (and others) to succeed. This card reflects the way our Shadow influences our ideas about work, success, and our own self-validation.

The Three Decans of Capricorn

Also associated with Capricorn are the Two, Three, and Four of Pentacles. These cards illustrate a narrative about how we develop a relationship with work and how we attain our material needs over time.

The Two of Pentacles speaks to planting the right seeds for a healthy work/life balance. It depicts an early point in this journey when resources are plentiful, and can be generated and regenerated through attentive focus and adaptability. Ideally, there is harmony between all elements and aspects of life, along with the energy and aptitude to manage them skillfully. The warning here is about diverting your focus, becoming overwhelmed, and consequently leaving a trail of poor decisions that affect your work, health, and output.

The Three of Pentacles arrives to rectify the pitfalls of the previous card, reminding us of the value of collaboration. Abstract ideas are beginning to take physical shape as progress is made. This card shows that each individual brings a unique set of skills and resources, and it’s crucial to learn how to leverage your strengths. Often, things come together best when effort is balanced, work is distributed, and rewards are shared.

The Four of Pentacles appears after the initial successes of the Three, symbolizing material stability and power. Resources are consolidating, and there may be a growing tendency to hold on too tightly for fear of losing everything, causing stagnation. It’s the old saying: “You have to spend money to earn money.” A good investor knows when to hold and when to take a risk. True balance lies between reckless spending and smart, intentional accumulation.

Here's a tarot spread for you to try out, which focuses on the themes of Capricorn and its associated tarot cards. First, find the Devil card in your deck and place it at the top of your working space. Then, take a deep breath, shuffle, and pull your cards for the remaining questions.

*Note: If any of the decan cards (2, 3, or 4 of Pentacles) appear, treat them as a magnifier of Temperance’s message: You may want to pay extra attention to that question/area.
