January was about orienting yourself, deciding which direction to go, and sitting with the stillness of waiting. As we move into February, we shift our focus to the outside forces at work and the current that is already in motion around us.
It’s important to know what you’re stepping into, and the idea of a running current is the perfect symbol to go with the Wheel of Fortune. The Wheel represents the course of life that we are all a part of, and while it does consist of our actions and decisions, much of it includes the external flow happening around us – the part we can’t always control.
Before setting yourself into the moving water of a river, you’d first want to discern a few things: What direction is it flowing? Do we want to go that way, and do we even have a choice?
That last part can feel like a total loss of control if the answer is 'no', which in turn leaves us with a multitude of reactions: anxiety, fear, anger, just to name a few. But what if we reframe this loss of control as reading the current, and then making an intentional, informed decision about how to move within it?
Often, motion that isn’t self-directed first shows up, not as an external event, but as a feeling (like restlessness, resistance, anticipation, or unease), before we can name what’s actually shifting.
Tarot is an excellent tool for sensing these changes! The symbols, imagery, and information in the cards can help us connect with our intuition, which then can help us better measure what’s happening around us as well as within us. Reading the cards brings thoughts and emotions to the surface, often ones you didn’t realize you had. This gauge tells us how we are really feeling about a situation, and what direction we truly wish to move in.
In tarot, water rules the realm of emotions, feelings, intuition, and spirituality. When we look at the Wheel of Fortune through the lens of water, we can connect to the ebb and flow of our emotions, the unpredictability of our feelings, and how they are being influenced by external (or internal) forces. This feels especially well-timed now, as we will soon be entering Pisces season mid-month, the sign of the fish and all that is deep, dreamy, and introspective.
